Putting One Foot Forward
If you had asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I would have told you about the many different dreams I had. I wanted to be a writer, a teacher and/or work making a difference in a child’s life. I spent my late teenage years and early twenties travelling and working with some very at risk children and youth. I vividly remember one night asking my mom if she would support me if I decided to open a school or community centre in a low income area - because I wanted to help others. I was a dreamer.
In some capacity I am doing all those things I dreamed of in my adolescence, but as I evolved as an individual so did my passions, and my heart shifted slightly leading me to where I am today, working as a Child and Youth Counsellor in schools.
I think the really great thing about life is that it’s actually okay to change the direction our lives are going and we don’t have to feel stuck. Whether it’s a slight change or a major life change, we can explore new passions and endeavours as they come. I truly believe that it’s important to be practical and responsible in our decisions, but also that life is meant to be lived and explored.
I’ve taken on new challenges (in a good way) in my life recently that are exciting and terrifying all at the same time. Not a day goes by where I don’t feel fear of failure, judgment or “imposter syndrome” (which is a fancy way of saying, I don’t believe that I belong “here”).
But day by day I put one foot forward and I take one more step outside of my comfort zone. Truthfully, I have no idea what will come of the steps I’m taking, and every step I take is scary, but I’m having fun while learning new skills along the way! I want to look back one day and be able to say I am so glad that I tried and I’m proud of myself for putting one foot forward (even if it resulted in taking a few steps back sometimes), instead of I wondering what would have happened if I had just tried.
What are you putting one foot forward towards today?
